We´ve had a couple of primo campspots recently. This one was high on the road to the monastery at Monte Cassino, scene of much of the fighting for Rome in 1944. NZ lost lots of soldiers here (The allies lost 54,000 in total). We visited the cemetery below the hill and found almost 500 NZ graves .




The monastery was established by St Benedict in the 6th century, and was flattened by US bombing before the battle because they thought (incorrectly as it turns out) it was a major observation post for the Germans. The Italian government rebuilt it entirely in the 1950´s.

These shots are from Pompeii, the famous buried Roman city. What a stunning place, the most striking things for me (JF) were the small and familiar things like election slogans on walls, "beware of the dog" tiled mosaics at front doors, and shops and stadiums not unlike modern buildings in shape.

Pedestrian crossings! High enough to keep your feet out of the sewage draining down the road, and low enough for wagons to straddle them..

Back in Spain, we had a super free-camp below the peaks of the glorious Monserrat range just outside of Barcelona. We spent a day roaming around the massive rocks and the hermitages of saints that lived amongst them.
